Which ovary is better for becoming pregnant?
Women have two ovaries. Is one ovary better than the other when trying to conceive? The answer is going to surprise you
The ovaries contain all of the eggs a woman has. Each month, in normal women, a single egg is released from one of those ovaries. Here are three interesting facts about the ability to get pregnant.
Women ovulate from the right ovary 10% more often than the left ovary. 55% of ovulations occur from the right side and only 45% occur from the left side. Although the general tendency is for ovulation to switch sides each month, that doesn’t always happen.
Sometimes women will ovulate from the same ovary two or more times in a row. If the follicular phase, which is the time from the beginning of your period until ovulation is less than 14 days, it is more common to ovulate from the opposite ovary the next month. If its more than 14 days, then it seems to be completely random
Your chance for pregnancy is better when you ovulate from the right side. I know, its sounds crazy but researchers studied thousands of cycles in women who ovulated. They looked at women with normal fertility who got pregnant on their own and women with infertility who got pregnant with treatment. They found that in months where a woman became pregnant, about two thirds of the time, ovulation happened from the right ovary.
Your chances for pregnancy are better when you ovulate from the opposite ovary from the previous month. This is true if you ovulate on your own or with fertility medication like Clomid
Out InfertilityTV bottom line is -- We have no bottom line. The human body is strange and we clearly dont understand a lot of things about it. What the heck, if you got pregnant from ovulation on your left side, leave a message in the comments

Is PGD necessary when doing IVF with Egg Donation?
PGD (also known as preimplantation genetic testing or PGT) can identify abnormal embryos during IVF. Is it necessary when using egg donation?
Human beings make lots of abnormal, nonviable embryos. The most common type are embryos that do not have the correct number of chromosomes. The older a woman gets, the higher the percentage of embryos will have chromosome abnormalities.
There are three possible outcomes if embryos with chromosome abnormalities are placed into your uterus. Most of the time, the embryos don't implant and you simply don’t get pregnant. Of those that do implant, most will miscarry. Chromosome abnormality is the most common cause of miscarriage. A very small number of abnormal embryos will result in live born babies. These babies will have birth defects such as Edward’s Syndrome which will cause the death of 90% of babies before they are 1 year old.
So, should testing for abnormal embryos be performed on all IVF cycles including Egg Donor cycles? Maybe not. Let’s look at the three problems I listed before.
Will it help you to get pregnant?
As an IVF expert, I am looking to see whether I get more women pregnant using PGT compared to not using PGT.
Younger women make fewer abnormal embryos than older women. Egg donors are usually young so egg donors usually have a lower percentage of abnormal embryos. That means that any embryo that my embryologists choose for transfer, is less likely to be abnormal if it comes from an egg donor. So testing all embryos is less useful in egg donors than it is for older women.
In fact, several studies have failed to find a difference in the chance for pregnancy when comparing IVF cycles in younger women and egg donors with tested embryos compared to the same younger women who had transfer of untested embryos.
In other words, using tested embryos in younger women did not improve the chance for success. Currently, embryo testing is very costly so it may not make sense for younger women and young egg donors.
This does not mean that it is impossible for a few individuals within those groups to benefit from testing. But there won’t be very many that will benefit. Most of the time, couples using an egg donor will have the same chance for success without PGT.
When does it make sense to use PGT in egg donor cycles? If a couple is interested in gender selection, then embryo testing is needed or if the male partner has a known chromosome problem like a translocation, then PGT may be warranted.

IVF 2 week wait - Is it necessary? Myth busted!
I have been seeing videos all over YouTube about the IVF two week wait. These videos focus on two things. 1. That you have to wait two weeks to have a pregnancy test and 2. that there are things you can do during those two weeks to improve the chance for implantation. Both are wrong! Coffee, Soda, Tea
Coffee, Soda and Tea all have one thing in common. They all contain caffeine. Caffeine has been linked with infertility and early miscarriage but not all studies agree on the effect. Part of the problem with these studies is that they rely on people accurately reporting how much caffeine they consume. People aren’t always honest about their use of things like alcohol, caffeine and tobacco. Furthermore, some people may just not realize how much they consume.
To try to get around this problem, researchers recently looked at 1200 women who were trying to conceive. Instead of asking how much caffeine they consumed, they measure the amount of caffeine and caffeine metabolites detected in their blood.
A pregnancy was confirmed if a woman had a positive blood pregnancy test. An early miscarriage diagnosis was made if a pregnancy was lost before it was seen on ultrasound, A later miscarriage were those that occurred after being seen on ultrasound.
The results are really pretty amazing. Women who had any detectable level of caffeine in their blood prior to conception had an almost 5 fold greater risk of an early miscarriage. There was very little impact of caffeine on later miscarriage except that coffee exerted a greater risk for later miscarriage whereas soda showed a greater risk for early miscarriage.
Our InfertilityTV bottom line. Avoid caffeine if you are trying to conceive
